Description

Add fuller background music, clear paging and reliable voice coverage with a 6.5-inch commercial ceiling speaker featuring selectable 70V/25V operation, an 8-ohm option and an integrated ABS backcan.

The Speco Technologies SP6MAT, also identified as SP-6MA/T, is a complete commercial in-ceiling speaker designed for offices, retail stores, restaurants, classrooms, clinics, hotels and other business interiors. Its coaxial two-way driver, ported enclosure, selectable transformer and enclosed construction support clear background music, paging and general announcements from one professional ceiling assembly.

Complete 6.5-Inch Commercial Ceiling Speaker

The SP6MAT arrives as a pre-assembled loudspeaker with its woofer, tweeter, transformer, backcan, mounting clamps, safety loop and grille combined into one unit.

The integrated enclosure helps protect the rear of the speaker and provides more consistent performance than a basic open-back ceiling speaker.

Manufacturer model: SP6MAT

AVTECK SKU: SP-6MA/T

Speaker design: 6.5-inch coaxial two-way

Operating options: 70V, 25V or 8Ω

Selling unit: Priced per speaker; minimum purchase quantity may apply

Coaxial Two-Way Music and Voice Reproduction

A 6.5-inch polypropylene woofer with a rubber surround reproduces lower and middle frequencies. A separate 1-inch Mylar tweeter handles high-frequency detail.

This coaxial two-way arrangement provides clearer music and speech than a basic single-cone paging speaker. It is well suited to businesses that use the same ceiling system for background music and announcements.

Ported Enclosure for Fuller Sound

The integrated enclosure uses a ported bass design to support the woofer’s low-frequency performance. Speco publishes a frequency range of 34Hz–20kHz for the SP6MAT.

Actual low-frequency output depends on the transformer tap, amplifier, speaker spacing, ceiling construction, room acoustics and listening level. A commercial subwoofer may still be required where strong or high-impact bass is expected.

Wide 120° Conical Coverage

The published 120-degree conical dispersion at 1kHz helps distribute sound over a broad listening area from each ceiling position.

Multiple speakers placed evenly across the room normally provide smoother coverage than a small number of speakers operating at high volume. Final spacing depends on ceiling height, room shape, partitions and background-noise levels.

Selectable 70V and 25V Operation

A front-access voltage selector allows the SP6MAT to operate with a compatible 70V or 25V distributed-audio amplifier.

Constant-voltage systems are practical when one amplifier must power several speakers across longer cable runs. The speakers connect electrically in parallel, and the selected wattage taps are added together to calculate the total amplifier load.

Set the selector to 70V when connected to a 70V output and to 25V when connected to a 25V output. Using the wrong voltage setting may damage the amplifier or speaker.

Easy-Select Transformer Tap Dial

The transformer selector is accessible from the front after the grille is removed. Lower settings reduce the amplifier load, while higher settings provide stronger speaker output.

Selector SettingGeneral Application
0.25W / 0.5W Quiet corridors, small rooms and low-level paging
1W / 2.5W Offices and comfortable low-level background music
5W / 7.5W Retail stores, restaurants and general business audio
15W / 30W Larger rooms or areas with higher background noise
40W Maximum transformer setting for higher-output applications
Compatible low-impedance amplifier operation

Available selector positions are 40W, 30W, 15W, 7.5W, 5W, 2.5W, 1W, 0.5W, 0.25W and 8Ω. Follow the markings on the speaker supplied with the order.

Calculate the Total Speaker Load

Add the selected transformer tap of every speaker connected to the commercial amplifier.

Example: Four SP6MAT speakers set to 15W create a 60W speaker load.

4 speakers × 15W = 60W total transformer load

Speaker-Load and Amplifier Examples

Speaker ConfigurationTotal LoadPractical Amplifier Size
2 speakers at 7.5W 15W 30W or higher
2 speakers at 15W 30W 60W or higher
2 speakers at 30W 60W 120W or higher
2 speakers at 40W 80W 120W or higher
4 speakers at 7.5W 30W 60W or higher
4 speakers at 15W 60W 120W or higher
8 speakers at 7.5W 60W 120W or higher
8 speakers at 15W 120W 240W or higher

Maintain Amplifier Headroom

As practical commercial-audio planning guidance, keep the combined speaker-tap load at or below approximately 80% of the amplifier’s rated output.

Amplifier RatingRecommended Maximum Speaker Load
30W Approximately 24W
60W Approximately 48W
120W Approximately 96W
240W Approximately 192W

Different Tap Settings for Different Rooms

Speakers connected to the same 70V or 25V line can use different tap settings.

A quiet office may use a 1W or 2.5W setting, while a restaurant, showroom or busier customer area uses 7.5W or 15W. Add every selected tap separately when calculating the complete amplifier load.

Optional 8Ω Transformer Bypass

Selecting the 8Ω position bypasses the transformer and allows the speaker to operate from a compatible low-impedance amplifier.

One SP6MAT presents an 8-ohm nominal load. Two speakers connected in parallel create a 4-ohm load. Confirm that the amplifier supports the final impedance before connecting multiple speakers.

Never connect the speaker to a 70V or 25V amplifier output while its transformer selector is set to 8Ω.

Press-Terminal Connections

Rear press terminals provide a convenient connection for the incoming commercial speaker cable.

  • Connect amplifier positive to the red speaker terminal.
  • Connect amplifier common or negative to the black terminal.
  • Keep polarity consistent throughout the complete speaker run.
  • Connect 70V and 25V speakers electrically in parallel.
  • Do not use series wiring for a constant-voltage commercial system.
  • Use speaker cable approved for the building and ceiling environment.

Important Connection Warning

Select the correct 70V, 25V or 8Ω operating mode before switching on the amplifier.

Do not connect a speaker set for 25V operation to a 70V output.

Do not connect an 8Ω speaker setting to a constant-voltage output.

Do not mix 70V, 25V and low-impedance amplifier outputs on the same speaker line.

Switch off and disconnect the amplifier before changing the selector, transformer tap or speaker wiring.

Fire-Resistant ABS Backcan

The front baffle and integrated rear enclosure are manufactured from fire-resistant ABS. The backcan protects the transformer, terminals and rear of the speaker.

Fire-resistant ABS construction should not be interpreted as a published UL 2043 plenum rating or fire-alarm loudspeaker certification. Confirm the required product ratings and local building-code requirements before installation.

Safety Loop for Secondary Support

A metal safety loop is attached to the rear enclosure for connection to a suitable secondary safety cable and structural anchor. The cable and attachment method should meet the ceiling structure and applicable installation requirements.

Optional BRC8F Ceiling Support Bracket

Speco identifies the BRC8F as the ceiling support bracket for the SP6MAT when installed in a suspended ceiling tile.

The bracket distributes the 5.5-pound speaker weight across the ceiling grid instead of placing the complete load on one tile.

The BRC8F ceiling bracket and secondary safety cable are optional installation components and are not included with the standard SP6MAT speaker.

9.88-Inch Ceiling Cutout

The published mounting diameter is 9.88 inches, approximately 251mm. The complete speaker measures approximately 11.02 inches across and 7.58 inches deep.

Use the supplied cutout template and inspect above the ceiling for wiring, pipes, framing, sprinkler lines and HVAC equipment before preparing the opening.

Four-Clamp Ceiling Installation

Four front-access mounting screws operate the integrated clamps behind the ceiling material.

Insert the speaker into the prepared opening and tighten the screws evenly until the assembly is secure. Avoid excessive tightening, which may damage the mounting mechanism or ceiling material.
