Start with Powered or Passive

This is usually more important than choosing the driver size first. The two types connect and receive power differently.

Built-In Amplifier

Powered Subwoofers

A powered subwoofer has its own amplifier built in and normally requires AC power. It connects to compatible audio equipment using a suitable audio output.

External Amplification

Passive Subwoofers

A passive subwoofer does not contain its own power amplifier. It must be matched with suitable external amplification as part of the audio system.

4 Things to Check Before Ordering

1
Check how the subwoofer is powered.

Confirm whether the model has its own built-in amplifier or requires separate amplification.

2
Check the connection on your existing equipment.

Look at the receiver, amplifier or audio source before ordering. Make sure it can provide the type of connection the selected subwoofer requires.

3
Choose a model intended for the installation location.

An indoor powered subwoofer and an outdoor in-ground subwoofer have very different installation needs. Use the product in the environment it was designed for.

4
Compare size after the system requirements are clear.

Driver size can help compare models, but it does not determine performance by itself. Consider the room or outdoor area, main speakers and how much bass you want.

What Does 8-Inch, 10-Inch or 12-Inch Mean?

The number generally refers to the approximate size of the subwoofer driver. It is useful when comparing products, but a larger driver is not automatically the right choice for every system.

Available space, enclosure design, amplification, main speakers and the bass level you want should also be considered.

Subwoofer Questions

What is the difference between a powered and passive subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer has its own amplifier built in and normally requires AC power. A passive subwoofer needs compatible external amplification.

What size subwoofer should I choose?

Driver size is only one part of the decision. Consider the listening area, main speakers, available space, system type and the amount of bass you want before choosing a model.

Can I connect a subwoofer to any amplifier or receiver?

No. The equipment must provide a connection or amplification method that matches the selected subwoofer. Check both products before ordering.

Can an indoor powered subwoofer be used outdoors?

Do not use an indoor subwoofer outdoors unless the product is specifically designed and rated for that environment. Choose an outdoor or in-ground model for a suitable landscape installation.
