70V and 25V Commercial Audio Compatibility
The built-in dual-voltage transformer allows the SPE86T to operate with compatible 70V and 25V commercial amplifiers.
A 70V system is commonly used for larger commercial installations and longer speaker runs. A 25V system may be found in smaller, localized or existing distributed-audio installations. Always match the speaker transformer connection to the amplifier’s actual output voltage.
Five Selectable Power Taps
The transformer provides several wattage choices, allowing the speaker output and amplifier load to be adjusted for different rooms.
| Selectable Tap | Typical Application |
|---|---|
| 0.25W | Very quiet rooms and low-level voice coverage |
| 0.5W | Offices, waiting rooms and quiet hallways |
| 1W | General office, classroom and retail coverage |
| 2.5W | Restaurants, larger rooms and moderate background noise |
| 5W | Higher output for larger or noisier indoor areas |
These application examples are general starting points. Ceiling height, speaker spacing, room acoustics and background-noise levels all affect the final tap selection.
Calculate the Total Speaker Load
In a distributed system, add the selected wattage tap of every speaker connected to the amplifier.
Example: Eight speakers set to 2.5W create a total load of 20W.
8 speakers × 2.5W = 20W total speaker load
SPE86T Speaker-Load Examples
| Speaker Configuration | Total Load | Practical Amplifier Planning |
|---|---|---|
| 8 speakers at 0.5W | 4W | Suitable for low-level paging from a properly sized amplifier |
| 8 speakers at 1W | 8W | Suitable for general voice and light music coverage |
| 8 speakers at 2.5W | 20W | Use an amplifier rated above 25W to maintain headroom |
| 8 speakers at 5W | 40W | A 60W amplifier provides practical operating headroom |
| 12 speakers at 2.5W | 30W | A 60W amplifier allows useful reserve capacity |
| 12 speakers at 5W | 60W | Use a 120W amplifier to maintain operating headroom |
Maintain 20% Amplifier Headroom
For dependable commercial operation, the total speaker-tap load should normally remain at or below approximately 80% of the amplifier’s rated output.
| Amplifier Rating | Recommended Maximum Speaker Load |
|---|---|
| 30W | Approximately 24W |
| 60W | Approximately 48W |
| 120W | Approximately 96W |
| 240W | Approximately 192W |
Flexible Tap Settings Across the Building
Speakers connected to the same constant-voltage line do not always need to use identical wattage taps.
A quiet office may use a 0.5W or 1W setting while a reception area uses 2.5W or 5W. Add each selected tap separately when calculating the final amplifier load.
Parallel Speaker Wiring
Constant-voltage speakers are normally connected electrically in parallel. The speaker cable can run from the amplifier to the first speaker and continue to additional speakers in a daisy-chain layout.
- Connect every speaker to the same system voltage.
- Connect amplifier common to the speaker common lead.
- Use only the lead for the selected wattage tap.
- Insulate all unused transformer leads separately.
- Keep positive and common wiring consistent throughout the run.
- Recalculate the load whenever a tap setting changes.
Important 70V and 25V Connection Warning
Use only the transformer connection intended for the amplifier’s actual speaker-line voltage.
Do not connect a 25V transformer lead to a 70V amplifier output.
Do not mix 25V and 70V amplifier outputs on the same speaker line.
Do not connect the speaker directly to a conventional low-impedance output unless the current speaker transformer is clearly labelled with a compatible low-impedance setting.
Switch off and disconnect the amplifier before installing the speaker or changing transformer connections.
White Low-Profile Ceiling Finish
The round white grille provides a simple commercial appearance that blends with many suspended and finished ceilings. The approximately 12.9-inch outside diameter covers the speaker assembly while maintaining a clean, traditional commercial ceiling-speaker design.
Important Ceiling-Cutout Notice
The published 12.9-inch measurement is the speaker’s outside diameter—not the ceiling cutout size.
Confirm the required opening from the current product, mounting hardware or installation template before cutting. Product revisions and mounting accessories may require different opening dimensions.
Optional Speco SER8 Back Mounting Box
AVTECK offers the Speco SER8 round back mounting box as an optional add-on for installations that require an enclosed rear mounting space.
Confirm the current speaker, ceiling construction, clearance, mounting method and project requirements before selecting the enclosure. The SER8 is not included with the standard SPE86T speaker.
Plan the Ceiling Layout Before Installation
- Distribute speakers evenly throughout occupied areas.
- Avoid placing every speaker close to one wall or doorway.
- Allow for shelving, partitions and fixtures that may block sound.
- Coordinate locations with lighting, sprinklers and HVAC equipment.
- Check above the ceiling for wiring, pipes, framing and ductwork.
- Confirm the ceiling system can safely support the complete assembly.
