Description

Add clear background music, paging and voice announcements with a compact 5.25-inch commercial ceiling speaker featuring an integrated transformer and enclosed ABS backcan.

The Speco Technologies SP5MAT, also identified as SP-5MA/T, is an all-in-one commercial ceiling speaker for 70V, 25V and compatible 8-ohm audio systems. It combines a polypropylene woofer, separate Mylar tweeter, ported enclosure, front-access transformer controls, metal grille and fire-retardant ABS backcan. It is suitable for offices, retail stores, restaurants, classrooms, clinics, hotels and other commercial interiors requiring music and clear voice coverage.

Complete Commercial Ceiling Speaker

The SP5MAT arrives as a pre-assembled speaker system with its woofer, tweeter, transformer, backcan, mounting clamps and grille combined into one ceiling assembly.

This enclosed construction helps provide more consistent sound from one installation location to another and protects the rear of the speaker compared with a basic open-back ceiling speaker.

Manufacturer model: SP5MAT

AVTECK model format: SP-5MA/T

Speaker design: 5.25-inch coaxial two-way

System options: 70V, 25V or 8Ω

Selling unit: One speaker

Coaxial Two-Way Sound

The SP5MAT uses a 5.25-inch polypropylene woofer with a rubber surround for lower and middle frequencies. A separate 1-inch Mylar tweeter reproduces higher-frequency detail.

This two-way configuration provides clearer music and speech than a basic single-cone paging speaker, making it suitable for commercial spaces that use the same system for background music and announcements.

Ported Enclosure for Fuller Background Music

A ported bass-reflex enclosure supports the speaker’s low-frequency performance. Speco publishes a frequency-response range of 57Hz–20kHz.

The ported enclosure and rubber-surround woofer help the SP5MAT produce fuller background music than many compact commercial paging speakers. It is still intended for distributed business audio rather than high-impact bass or high-volume entertainment systems.

Wide 120° Conical Coverage

The published 120-degree conical dispersion at 1kHz helps distribute sound across the occupied area from each ceiling position.

Final speaker spacing depends on ceiling height, room shape, partitions, background noise and the required listening level. Multiple evenly spaced speakers normally provide smoother coverage than a small number of speakers operating at high volume.

Selectable 70V and 25V Operation

A front-access voltage selector allows the installer to configure the speaker for a compatible 70V or 25V distributed audio system.

Constant-voltage systems are commonly used when one amplifier must power several speakers across a commercial building. The speakers are connected electrically in parallel, and the selected tap wattages are added together to calculate the amplifier load.

Select 70V when connected to a 70V amplifier output and select 25V when connected to a 25V output. Never use the wrong voltage setting.

Easy-Select Transformer Dial

The front-mounted transformer dial allows the speaker level to be adjusted after the grille is removed. Higher wattage settings provide more speaker output while using more amplifier capacity.

Published TapGeneral Application
0.25W / 0.5W Quiet rooms, corridors and low-level paging
1W / 2.5W Office background music and general voice coverage
7.5W Retail, restaurants and areas with moderate background noise
15W Larger commercial rooms requiring stronger output
30W Maximum transformer setting for higher-output applications
Compatible low-impedance amplifier operation

Speco documentation has been published in more than one revision. The newer specification sheet lists 30W, 15W, 7.5W, 2.5W, 1W, 0.5W, 0.25W and 8Ω.

Some manual and product revisions also show a 5W position. Follow the markings on the selector dial supplied with the actual speaker.

Calculate the Commercial Speaker Load

Add the selected transformer tap of every speaker connected to the amplifier. Do not calculate the system using the speaker’s 30W RMS rating unless every speaker is actually set to the 30W tap.

Speaker ConfigurationTotal Tap LoadPractical Amplifier Size
2 speakers at 7.5W 15W 30W or higher
2 speakers at 15W 30W 60W or higher
2 speakers at 30W 60W 120W or higher
4 speakers at 7.5W 30W 60W or higher
4 speakers at 15W 60W 120W or higher
8 speakers at 7.5W 60W 120W or higher
8 speakers at 15W 120W 240W or higher

Maintain Amplifier Headroom

As practical commercial-audio planning guidance, keep the total transformer-tap load at or below approximately 80% of the amplifier’s rated output.

Amplifier RatingRecommended Maximum Tap Load
30W Approximately 24W
60W Approximately 48W
120W Approximately 96W
240W Approximately 192W

Different Tap Settings for Different Areas

Speakers connected to the same 70V or 25V line can use different wattage settings.

A quiet office may use a 1W or 2.5W setting while a retail area or restaurant uses 7.5W or 15W. Add every selected tap separately when calculating the total amplifier load.

Optional 8Ω Transformer Bypass

Selecting the 8Ω position bypasses the transformer and allows the SP5MAT to operate with a compatible low-impedance amplifier.

One speaker presents an 8-ohm nominal load. Two speakers connected in parallel create a 4-ohm load. Confirm that the amplifier supports the final impedance before connecting multiple speakers.

Never connect a speaker set to 8Ω directly to a 70V or 25V amplifier output. Constant-voltage and low-impedance calculations are different and must not be mixed.

Press-Terminal Speaker Connections

Rear press terminals provide a secure, convenient connection for the incoming speaker cable.

  • Connect amplifier positive to the red speaker terminal.
  • Connect amplifier common or negative to the black terminal.
  • Keep polarity consistent throughout the complete system.
  • Connect commercial speakers electrically in parallel, not in series.
  • Use cable approved for the building and ceiling environment.

Important Connection Warning

Select the correct 70V, 25V or 8Ω operating mode before switching on the amplifier.

Do not connect a speaker set for 25V operation to a 70V output.

Do not connect an 8Ω speaker setting to a constant-voltage output.

Do not mix 70V, 25V and low-impedance amplifier outputs on the same speaker line.

Switch off and disconnect the amplifier before changing the voltage selector, transformer tap, wiring or speaker connections.

Fire-Retardant ABS Backcan

The front baffle and integrated rear enclosure are manufactured from fire-retardant ABS. The enclosed design protects the transformer, connection terminals and rear of the speaker.

Fire-retardant ABS construction should not be interpreted as a published UL 2043 plenum or fire-alarm loudspeaker certification. Confirm the required product ratings and local code requirements for the project.

Safety Loop for Secondary Support

A metal safety loop is attached to the backcan for connection to a suitable secondary safety cable and structural anchor. Select the safety cable and attachment method according to the ceiling structure and applicable installation requirements.

Optional BRC6F Ceiling Tile Bracket

Speco recommends the optional BRC6F bracket when the speaker is installed in a suspended ceiling tile.

The bracket reinforces the ceiling material and transfers the speaker weight to the ceiling grid. It is especially important where the tile alone cannot safely support the 4.5-pound speaker assembly.

The BRC6F ceiling tile bracket and secondary safety cable are optional installation components and are not included with the standard SP5MAT speaker.

8.38-Inch Ceiling Cutout

The published mounting diameter is 8.38 inches, approximately 213mm. The complete speaker measures approximately 9.43 inches across and 6.12 inches deep.

Use the supplied cutout template and inspect above the ceiling for electrical wiring, pipes, framing, sprinkler lines and HVAC equipment before preparing the opening.

Four-Clamp Ceiling Installation

Four front-access mounting screws operate the integrated clamps behind the ceiling material.

Insert the speaker into the prepared opening and tighten the four screws evenly until the assembly is secure. Avoid excessive tightening, which may damage the mounting mechanism or ceiling material.
