Description
Deliver clear paging, voice announcements and dependable background music with an 8-inch commercial ceiling speaker designed for 70V, 25V and compatible 8-ohm audio systems.
The Speco Technologies SPG86T combines an 8-inch dual-cone speaker, a built-in dual-voltage transformer, modern steel grille and four integrated mounting clamps in one commercial ceiling assembly. Selectable power taps make it suitable for offices, retail stores, restaurants, schools, clinics, hotels, corridors and other Canadian commercial spaces requiring practical, evenly distributed audio.
8-Inch Commercial Ceiling Speaker
The larger 8-inch paper cone provides fuller voice and music reproduction than many compact commercial paging speakers.
It is a practical choice for areas where clear announcements and comfortable background music are required without moving to a larger, higher-powered foreground-music system.
Speaker size: 8 inches
Driver design: Dual paper cone
System options: 70V, 25V or 8Ω
Transformer taps: 0.25W, 0.5W, 1W, 2.5W and 5W
Selling unit: One speaker
Dual-Cone Sound for Music and Paging
The SPG86T uses an 8-inch paper cone with a smaller secondary cone to extend high-frequency reproduction. This dual-cone construction allows one driver assembly to reproduce both speech and general music content.
It should be described as a dual-cone commercial speaker rather than a conventional two-way design with a separate crossover, woofer and independently mounted tweeter.
Published frequency response: 90Hz–20kHz
Published sensitivity: 91dB ±3dB at 1W / 1m
Published coverage: Approximately 120° conical at 1kHz
Best for Everyday Commercial Audio
The SPG86T is designed for commercial installations where dependable paging and general background music are more important than deep bass or high-volume entertainment audio.
- Customer and staff announcements
- General paging and public-address systems
- Low-to-moderate background music
- Recorded messages and notification tones
- Classroom and training-room program audio
- Hallway, reception and common-area coverage
For deep bass, loud foreground music or fitness and entertainment applications, select a higher-powered two-way commercial speaker or add a compatible subwoofer.
Recommended Commercial Applications
| Business Type | Typical Use |
|---|---|
| Office Building | Reception, corridors, work areas and staff announcements |
| Retail Store or Showroom | Customer paging and general sales-floor music |
| Restaurant or Café | Dining-area music and staff communication |
| School or Training Facility | Classroom paging, recorded messages and program audio |

70V and 25V Commercial Audio Compatibility
A built-in dual-voltage transformer allows the SPG86T to connect to compatible 70V and 25V commercial amplifiers.
A 70V system is commonly used when several speakers must operate over longer cable distances. A 25V system may be used in smaller localized installations or existing buildings equipped with 25V audio.
Always use the transformer leads identified for the amplifier’s actual speaker-line voltage. Do not use a 25V connection with a 70V amplifier output.
Five Selectable Transformer Taps
The selectable wattage settings allow the installer to adjust the speaker output and amplifier load according to the room.
| Tap Setting | General Application |
|---|---|
| 0.25W | Very quiet rooms and low-level voice coverage |
| 0.5W | Small offices, waiting rooms and quiet corridors |
| 1W | General office, classroom and retail paging |
| 2.5W | Larger rooms and moderate background noise |
| 5W | Stronger output for larger or noisier indoor areas |
These are general planning examples. Final tap selection depends on ceiling height, speaker spacing, room acoustics, background noise and required listening level.
Speaker Power and Transformer Tap Ratings
Speaker power handling: 10W RMS and 15W maximum.
Maximum 70V/25V transformer tap: 5W. Use the selected transformer tap—not the 10W driver rating—when calculating the commercial amplifier load.
Calculate the Total Speaker Load
Add the selected transformer tap of every speaker connected to the amplifier.
Example: Eight SPG86T speakers set to 2.5W create a 20W speaker load.
8 speakers × 2.5W = 20W total transformer load
SPG86T Speaker-Load Examples
| Speaker Configuration | Total Load | Practical Amplifier Selection |
|---|---|---|
| 4 speakers at 1W | 4W | Properly sized amplifier above 5W |
| 4 speakers at 2.5W | 10W | 20W or higher |
| 4 speakers at 5W | 20W | 30W or higher |
| 6 speakers at 5W | 30W | 60W or higher |
| 8 speakers at 2.5W | 20W | 30W or higher |
| 8 speakers at 5W | 40W | 60W or higher |
| 12 speakers at 5W | 60W | 120W or higher |
Maintain 20% Amplifier Headroom
Speco instructs installers to keep the combined transformer-tap load at or below 80% of the amplifier’s rated output.
| Amplifier Rating | Recommended Maximum Tap Load |
|---|---|
| 30W | Approximately 24W |
| 60W | Approximately 48W |
| 120W | Approximately 96W |
| 240W | Approximately 192W |
Different Tap Settings for Different Areas
Speakers connected to the same distributed-audio line can use different wattage taps.
A quiet office may use a 0.5W or 1W setting while a reception area, restaurant or busier customer section uses 2.5W or 5W. Add every selected tap separately when calculating the total system load.
Optional 8Ω Operation
The published transformer specification includes an 8-ohm connection for use with a compatible low-impedance amplifier.
Low-impedance wiring is calculated differently from a 70V or 25V transformer system. One SPG86T presents an 8-ohm load. Two 8-ohm speakers connected in parallel create a 4-ohm load.
Use the 8-ohm connection only when the current transformer and speaker leads are clearly identified for 8Ω operation. Never connect the 8Ω lead to a 70V or 25V amplifier output.
Parallel and Daisy-Chain Wiring
Multiple SPG86T speakers in a 70V or 25V system are normally connected electrically in parallel. The speaker cable can run from the amplifier to the first speaker and continue to additional speakers.
- Connect every speaker to the same system voltage.
- Connect amplifier positive to the required coloured tap lead.
- Connect amplifier negative to the black common lead.
- Keep all positive connections together.
- Keep all common connections together.
- Use only one wattage tap per speaker.
- Trim and insulate every unused lead.
Important Connection Warning
Use only transformer connections that match the amplifier’s actual output voltage.
Do not connect a 25V transformer lead to a 70V amplifier output.
Do not mix 70V and 25V outputs on the same speaker line.
Do not connect the 8Ω lead to a constant-voltage amplifier terminal.
Maintain consistent polarity throughout a daisy-chained system.
Switch off and disconnect the amplifier before installing speakers or changing transformer connections.
Modern Steel Mesh Grille
The SPG86T uses a round, modern-style steel mesh grille finished in off-white to blend with many suspended and finished commercial ceilings.
The high-impact polymer baffle supports the speaker and mounting mechanism while the steel grille protects the driver below the ceiling.
9.5-Inch Ceiling Cutout
Speco’s installation instructions specify a 9.5-inch circular opening for the SPG86T.
The speaker assembly also requires at least 2.8 inches of clear space between the rear of the ceiling tile and any obstruction above it. Measure the current speaker and inspect the ceiling before cutting.
Four Integrated Mounting Clamps
Four integrated L-shaped mounting clamps secure the speaker against the rear of the ceiling tile or compatible mounting bracket.
Remove the grille, place the speaker into the prepared opening and tighten the four clamps evenly with a Phillips screwdriver. Avoid overtightening, which can damage the ceiling tile or mounting assembly.
Optional BRC8 Ceiling Tile Bracket
The Speco BRC8 bracket may be used to provide additional support and distribute the speaker weight across a suspended-ceiling grid.
The BRC8 bracket is sold separately, normally in pairs, and is not included with the standard SPG86T speaker.
Plan the Ceiling Layout Before Installation
- Distribute speakers evenly across occupied areas.
- Avoid placing every speaker near one wall or entrance.
- Allow for partitions, shelving and fixtures that block sound.
- Coordinate locations with lights, sprinklers and HVAC equipment.
- Check for wiring, pipes, framing and ductwork above the ceiling.
- Confirm the ceiling can support the complete speaker assembly.
