Designed for Paging and Background Music
The SPG66T is designed for commercial systems that need understandable speech, paging tones, recorded messages and light background music.
The published 120Hz–20kHz frequency response emphasizes the speech and music range most commonly used in business audio systems. For deeper bass or higher-output foreground music, consider a larger two-way commercial speaker or a system with a subwoofer.

70V and 25V Commercial Audio Compatibility
The built-in dual-voltage transformer allows the SPG66T to operate with compatible 70V and 25V commercial amplifiers.
A 70V system is commonly used for larger installations and longer cable runs. A 25V system may be found in smaller localized systems or existing commercial buildings. Always use the transformer connections that match the amplifier’s actual output voltage.
Selectable Transformer Taps
The selectable wattage taps allow the speaker level and amplifier load to be adjusted for different rooms and background-noise conditions.
| Tap Setting | General Application |
|---|---|
| 0.25W | Very quiet rooms and low-level voice coverage |
| 0.5W | Small offices, waiting rooms and quiet corridors |
| 1W | General office, classroom and retail paging |
| 2.5W | Larger rooms and moderate background noise |
| 5W | Stronger output for larger or noisier indoor areas |
Transformer layout and lead identification may vary by production version. Follow the markings on the current speaker and transformer when selecting 70V, 25V and wattage connections.
Speaker Power and Transformer Tap Ratings
Speaker power handling: 10W RMS and 15W maximum.
Maximum distributed-audio transformer tap: 5W. Use 5W—not the 10W driver rating—when calculating the 70V or 25V amplifier load.
Calculate the Total Speaker Load
Add the selected transformer tap of every speaker connected to the amplifier.
Example: Eight SPG66T speakers set to 2.5W create a 20W load.
8 speakers × 2.5W = 20W total transformer load
SPG66T Speaker-Load Examples
| Speaker Configuration | Total Load | Suggested Amplifier Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| 4 speakers at 1W | 4W | Properly sized amplifier above 5W |
| 4 speakers at 2.5W | 10W | 20W or higher |
| 4 speakers at 5W | 20W | 30W or higher |
| 6 speakers at 5W | 30W | 60W or higher |
| 8 speakers at 2.5W | 20W | 30W or higher |
| 8 speakers at 5W | 40W | 60W or higher |
| 12 speakers at 5W | 60W | 120W or higher |
Maintain 20% Amplifier Headroom
Speco recommends keeping the total selected speaker load at or below 80% of the amplifier’s rated output.
| Amplifier Rating | Recommended Maximum Speaker Load |
|---|---|
| 30W | Approximately 24W |
| 60W | Approximately 48W |
| 120W | Approximately 96W |
| 240W | Approximately 192W |
Different Tap Settings for Different Areas
Speakers connected to the same distributed-audio line can use different transformer taps.
A quiet office may use a 0.5W or 1W tap while a reception area or restaurant section uses 2.5W or 5W. Add every selected tap separately when calculating the complete amplifier load.
Parallel and Daisy-Chain Wiring
Multiple SPG66T speakers are normally connected electrically in parallel. The speaker cable may run from the amplifier to the first speaker and continue to the remaining speakers.
- Connect all speakers to the same 70V or 25V speaker line.
- Connect the amplifier positive conductor to the required wattage lead.
- Connect amplifier negative to the black common lead.
- Keep all positive connections together and all common connections together.
- Use only one transformer tap per speaker.
- Trim and insulate every unused transformer lead.
Important 70V and 25V Connection Warning
Use only transformer connections that match the amplifier’s actual speaker-line voltage.
Do not connect a 25V transformer tap to a 70V amplifier output.
Do not mix 70V and 25V outputs on the same speaker line.
Although the internal speaker driver is published as 8 ohms, use a low-impedance connection only when the current production speaker and transformer are clearly marked for 8-ohm operation.
Switch off and disconnect the amplifier before installing speakers or changing any transformer connection.
Modern Mesh Steel Grille
The modern round mesh grille provides a cleaner appearance than older paging-speaker grille designs.
Its off-white finish blends with many suspended and finished commercial ceilings while protecting the speaker cone below the ceiling surface.
7.625-Inch Ceiling Cutout
Speco’s installation guide specifies a 7.625-inch circular ceiling opening for the SPG66T assembly.
The installation requires at least 2.4 inches of clearance between the rear of the ceiling tile and any obstruction above it. Measure the current speaker and confirm the available ceiling space before cutting.
Four Dog-Ear Mounting Clamps
Four integrated L-shaped dog-ear clamps secure the speaker against the rear of the ceiling tile or mounting bracket.
Remove the grille before installation, place the speaker into the prepared opening and tighten the four clamps evenly with a Phillips screwdriver. Do not overtighten the clamps or damage the ceiling tile.
Plan the Speaker Layout Before Cutting
- Distribute speakers evenly throughout occupied areas.
- Avoid placing every speaker near one wall or doorway.
- Allow for partitions, shelves and fixtures that may block sound.
- Coordinate speaker positions with lights, sprinklers and HVAC equipment.
- Check above the ceiling for wiring, pipes, framing and ductwork.
- Confirm that the ceiling material can support the complete assembly.
